Philip Boon
Phil Boon is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Freshwater Biological Association, a Fellow of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH, Edinburgh), and has two honorary professorships – one at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Scotland, and the other at the University of Novi Sad in Serbia. After completing a PhD in freshwater invertebrate ecology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, he moved to Jamaica to take up a lectureship at the University of the West Indies.
He retired recently after 25 years as Head of Ecosystems and Biodiversity at Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Government’s advisory body on nature conservation. He continues to work on various freshwater projects with a wide range of organisations, including the European Commission. Much of his time is spent as Chief Editor of the Wiley journal Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, which he helped set up 28 years ago.
